I finally had some time to sew! Rebekah needed a new swimming skirt before we took off on our camping trip. I used her old one as a pattern to trace around and added a few inches to make it bigger. It turned out really cute. I started making it, and then Rebekah and my niece heard the machine running and decided they wanted to make a skirt too. So, they took over my sewing room when I was tending to Peter. I had to wait until the next day to finish mine! But they did a great job and made a cute pink pencil skirt for my niece. The next morning, Rebekah wanted to make a skirt for herself. She made a long maxi skirt! She cut the fabric and did all the sewing, I just helped tell her the next step when she was doing the elastic. I'm so proud of her! I love that she loves sewing too! Lastly, I turned two dresses that she didn't like into skirts. We did all of this with fabric and supplies I already had on hand, so it was free, yeah!

How do you do it? This is a common question I hear when people find out I have 6 kids and I homeschool them. I thought I would share our homeschool schedule today. Currently, I am teaching 6th, 4th and 1st grades, while I also have 3 boys that are 4, 2 and 6 months. I need to preface this by saying that these times are not fixed, we are VERY flexible around here! Here's our current schedule:

6:30 Kids wake up and make their own breakfast (older help the younger)
7:30 Mom wakes up (Yep, I'm the last one up!)
9:30 The 6th and 4th grader start working on their independent notebooks (Brush teeth, read bible, bible memorization, handwriting, spelling, math facts, book basket, any other worksheets they can do themselves.)
9:30 I teach 1st grade while the 4 and 2 year olds make a mess and distract us...
11:00 Lunch and Free time (or finish notebook)
1:30 Nap time for the 2 year old
1:45 Nap time for the 4 year old
1:45 Snack
2:00 6th and 4th grade time with mom: bible, history, science, math, english, art, etc. (We go from one subject to the next with no breaks, so we can get a lot done in this time.)
4:00-5:00 Finished with school

I recently filmed a Day in the Life video in which I share about our schedule and show my son's notebook. Click on the video below to watch.

I was able to film an Ordinary Morning (click on the video above to watch). Peter is especially adorable, while the other boys are a bit rambunctious! I loved filming Joshua reading because he likes to add commentary that is funny, although sometimes it can get frustrating.

I did not Vlog much of the afternoon, but it was busy. We decided to take a walk to McDonald's for ice cream, which is usually a 20 minute walk. However, we stopped to visit with our neighbors, a sweet elderly couple. Please pray for Jerome with us, as he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I know they would appreciate all prayers! Our walk also took forever because Daniel (the 2 year old) decided that he absolutely, under no circumstances, would ride in the stroller! He walked the entire way!!! We finished the day by Rebekah, Peter and I going to a sign language class, while Kevin took the rest of the boys to a minor league baseball game. Oh yeah, we also got school finished in there somewhere.
Last week I filmed a Homeschool Day in the Life Vlog. Click on the video below to see it. I ended the vlog by saying we were headed to church. As we were getting out of the van, Matthew started having a little fit and wouldn't go into church. He stopped right under a street light... As I was trying to persuade him to come, I looked down and there was an owl pellet! A homeschooler's lucky find! Of course we got a plastic grocery bag and took it home!
Once it was cool, we used tweezers and toothpicks to pull out the bones. We thought we had part of a skull, but it didn't look at all like the rat skeleton we found in the owl pellet we bought earlier this year (see below) from Home Science Tools. After looking at diagrams of many different small animals in our area, we still don't know what type of animal it was.

Hello! I have been working on a new adventure, vlogging! My Youtube channel is called Real Life. Real Joy. I have been practicing with my phone and editing them using Davinci Resolve, an awesome video editing program I was able to download for free! I am currently researching cameras and hope to buy one soon. Click below to check it out and let me know what you think in the comments!

Yesterday we made African Groundnut Sauce served over white rice, and ham (but I don't think that part was African). The recipe was in my teacher's manual for week 28 MFW Explorers to 1850. We read about the Zulu Wars in South Africa in the early 1800s. The sauce included natural peanut butter and tomatoes, although I used some tomato sauce because I didn't have any fresh ones. We all ate it, but I don't think I'll make it again. I love making food from different countries as part of our school.

On another note, we were driving today and suddenly Matthew yelled, "I see an M!" Since I was at a red light, I took a picture of his "M". Can you see it?
God blessed us with an amazing house we were able to pay cash for! It was a foreclosure, so we were able to get it at a great price and still have money left to fix it up. It is 2800 square feet with 5 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a large living room, dining room and an extra family room!

Before we moved in, we had to replace most of the electrical and plumbing. We also had to put in a furnace, air conditioning, hot water heater, and purchase all of the appliances. We also covered up one of two basement stairs and took out a hot tub! Yes, I said hot tub! It was gross...

We painted the master bedroom (there was a walrus on the wall!) and the bathroom, which was purple sponge paint!

Laminate wood flooring went into the kitchen, dining room, and master bedroom. Fresh carpet went down in the living room and up the stairs. Lastly, Kevin and the kids put up a tile back splash in the kitchen that is beautiful. Here are some before and after pics.
After we moved in, Kevin and the older kids painted 3 of the kid's bedrooms and laid carpet in 2 of them. Poor Daniel had a hot pink room for a year, LOL!

The last big indoor project we (I really mean Kevin) did was paint and lay laminate wood floor in our family room, which we also use for school. It's beautiful now and my favorite room in the house! What do you think?

This school year, Caleb is in 6th grade, Rebekah is in 4th, and Joshua is in K, although he moved to 1st grade in March. I am still using My Father's World, doing the 4th year of the family cycle, Exploration to 1850. We have enjoyed every year of the family cycle so far, this one is no exception. We just finished learning about the Louisiana Purchase, and have been playing the game Ticket to Ride. One big change that we have made this year is switching our writing curriculum to Institute for Excellence in Writing. I will do a more in depth post about it later, but it is working very well for my reluctant writer.

Above, some of the kids are posing in front of our botany science experiments (Apologia). Can you tell in the photo below that they changed color?

It's been a couple years since I've posted on here... life kinda just happened! Since I last posted, we've added two babies and a house!

First came the house, a foreclosure that needed a lot of work. You can see that I'm very pregnant in this picture!

Then came Daniel. It was a crazy November and December! While I was having a baby, workers were fixing our house. We brought a bouncy seat and a camping chair so I could nurse the baby and he could be with us while we painted. We finally moved in two weeks before Christmas. Here's a recent picture of Daniel. He was helping to make pie for Pi Day!

Life continued to be busy, and then we found out we were expecting another boy! Yep, we now have 5 boys and 1 girl. Here is our latest edition: Peter.

Sukkoth was our last biblical feast to celebrate this fall. Traditionally, a sukkoth (or booth) should be made out wood with tree branches as the roof. We took the lazy way out of this one and used our tent! For dinner, we had venison, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, and challah bread.

While cleaning out my craft area recently, I found a half of skein of cotton yarn and decided to use it up. I made a simple dish cloth using a double crochet stitch. Now, I think I might have to go buy more! I really need more dish clothes.Caseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03200764361430470215noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990732224612767610.post-51545641217273764212015-10-15T06:00:00.000-05:002015-10-15T06:00:00.865-05:00MFW Creation to the Greeks - Week 8

We've continued on with Abraham's family, covering his almost sacrifice of Isaac, Isaac marrying Rebekah, the birth of Esau and Jacob, and then Jacob deceiving his father (Genesis 22-27). The kids each wrote a summary of Abraham and Isaac, Caleb's is on top, Rebekah's is below.
For science, this week was about how the human eye sees, and also about reflection and absorption of light. Above is Caleb's science notebook where he drew pictures of the experiments.

All our other subjects were just normal as usual. Caleb has been doing much better at writing, and not having fits about it, which I am very thankful for.

In week 7, we continued reading about Abraham (Genesis 17-21) while also returning to ancient Egypt. The kids attempted to make papyrus paper using grocery bags and glue (above). We read about hieroglyphics and practiced some ancient Egyptian writing. Below is supposed to be the kids names, Caleb's is in blue.

I also started reading aloud The Cat of Bubastes by G. A. Henty. So far, we are really enjoying it. It starts with some graphic battle scenes which Caleb loves. It's written in older English, which was a bit difficult at first, but once the story got going, even Rebekah was enjoying it. Each chapter takes about 45 minutes to read, so we'll be reading this book for a few weeks.

Apparently, I didn't take very many pictures during week 6! This is the only one that I have. Here are Caleb and Rebekah playing the Royal Game of Ur, which was included in our curriculum. We've taken a small break from ancient Egypt to study Abraham and where he lived. Celebrating Sukkoth was also part of this week, but we just didn't have time, so it will be coming later. English, math, spelling, and writing have all continued this week as normal. I'll have to do a better job taking pictures!Caseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03200764361430470215noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990732224612767610.post-48318791868825009272015-09-30T07:00:00.000-05:002015-09-30T07:00:07.642-05:00Yom Kippur Feast - MFW Creation to the Greeks

We did not have time to celebrate Yom Kippur when it was scheduled in our curriculum, so when I realized that Sept 23rd was the real day, I decided to change our menu for the night and we celebrated Yom Kippur instead. Thankfully, the meal was simple. Rebekah helped me make Kreplach, which is pictured below. It is pie crust filled with meat, potatoes, and carrots. They were very good. The rest of our menu was simply baked potatoes, green beans, and grape juice.
After eating, we read the story of Jonah and talked about repentence. It happened to be a Wed night, so we went to church for our midweek service.

Here's a picture of our mummy experiment. We learned about how the Egyptians dried and preserved the mummies, so we did our own experiment on bread. We started with one plain, one toasted, and one smeared with triple antibiotic cream. The first one to mold was actually the one with cream on it, but I think that was because the cream made it moister. The toasted one never molded at all.
I found a Reading Rainbow DVD about mummies that they watched, and they also played an online game that was linked to from our Usborne Ancient World book.
Even our art was about Egypt this week. They had to draw a maze inside the pyramid. Caleb (top) understood how to make a maze, I was actually very impressed with his. Rebekah (below) didn't quite understand, but a tomb robber would definitely get lost in her pyramid!
We finally got to do our science experiment that required a bright sunny day. It seemed like it would be rainy and overcast forever! We used a magnifying glass to burn paper! Caleb especially thought it was awesome. The white computer paper did not burn for us, but the black construction paper did right away. We happened to be outside doing this when the school bus came by, so a bunch of neighbor kids came to see too! For week 4, we took a break from our Science in the Beginning and used a Usborne book about Pyramids. Below, we were testing how much easier it was to pull a heavy load when it was on rollers.
These pictures were from our Tashlich ceremony, which was part of Rosh Hashanah. We went to a nearby lake and took rocks, which were symbolic of our sins, and threw them in to the lake. Micah 7:19 says "You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea". I'm very glad that we took the time to do this!

My cake decorating might be coming to an end! Rebekah wanted to decorate her own cake for her recent 7th birthday. I covered it with the white icing, and wrote the letters, but she did the rest. I did "draw" a line with a knife for the first rainbow color for her to follow. Look at her flower! Daddy promised that she could decorate his next birthday cake for him!

We celebrated Rosh Hashanah this week, which is celebrating the start of the Jewish new year, the birthday of the world. Rebekah made the crown for our globe centerpiece, which symbolized that God is the King of the whole world.

We made our own shofar out of a whistle that Caleb had and a paper bag. The real shofars are rams horns, and very cool!

I made Challah bread again, but this time it had a different shape. The loaf is round to symbolize the desire for a full and round year. On the bottom of the picture, you can see some lumps that kind of look like a ladder, it should at least, which represents that our prayers are directed to God. Right in the center on the top, was a bird shape before the dough rose too much. The bird symbolizes that our prayers get lifted up to God.

Our menu was: baked fish, glazed carrots, green beans, sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, and the Challah bread. We also had grape juice to drink, and apples dipped in honey (pictured in one of the above pictures). The sweetness of the honey was to symbolize the sweetness of a new year.

Dessert was honey cake. I followed the recipe that was in our book, Celebrating Biblical Feasts. Unfortunately, I had the oven a bit too high and it burned a little on the ends, but the overall flavor was good, even if it was too dry.

The real holiday is not until September 13th this year, so maybe you can plan your own celebration.

This week in bible and history we continued to learn about Noah and his descendants, then moved on to the Tower of Babel and Mesopotamia. In the right picture above, you can see Caleb's bible lands map that he drew. My Father's World has a neat story to tell as you illustrate it. The left side is a map of how Noah's descendants traveled after the flood.
Here is the writing from Caleb's notebook page about Noah. I required him to write 4 sentences, since he is in 4th grade. We're working on writing better sentences. Below is Rebekah's picture.
Next up was the Fertile Crescent and Mesopotamia. We looked at several books about the Sumerians, and watched a good movie about Ancient Mesopotamia that I found at the library. To review our Greek words, I had the idea of making a crossword puzzle for the words and some of the derivations. I found this free crossword puzzle generator and created one for the first 3 words. The kids liked doing this, so I'm sure I will do it again.
Writing Strands with Caleb went a little better this week. We only did it one day while Rebekah was at a friends house, so he had my undivided attention. It still wasn't fun for him, but we made it through with minimal crying. Below are the sentences he wrote, making them longer as he went.
Here's a glimpse of God and the History of Art. They are not huge fans of drawing. It doesn't help that I usually leave it to the end, so they tend to rush through it to be done for the day. To me, art is an extra that is not necessary, so it's hard to put it before other subjects. Next week, we will be starting to learn more about the history of Egyptian art, maybe they will like those lessons better.
This is our new system for independent work, and I LOVE it! I came across this blog, amongst lovely things, and decided to try her idea of using simple spiral notebooks as student planners. Every afternoon, once school is over, I fill in the next days assignments. These are the assignments that they can do by themselves, or with minimal help from me. I even include "brush teeth" every day so I know it gets done! They get to decide what order they do things, checking off the boxes as they go. When they complete the whole day, I check to make sure it's actually done and then let them put a sticker on top. Now, I start the school day by telling them to "start their notebooks" while I clean up a bit and do some activities with the little boys. If it's time to do school with me, then they finish what's left after we're done. This is working REALLY well. Things that usually got forgotten, like their own bible reading time, now are done every day. It's been a great thing for our homeschool, and you can't beat the price of a 19 cent notebook!Caseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03200764361430470215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990732224612767610.post-70568895920203424892015-08-28T19:24:00.002-05:002015-08-28T19:24:58.620-05:00MFW Creation to the Greeks, Week 2

A new thing this year is English from the Roots up. I wasn't sure how Caleb and Rebekah would like it, but it has gone over very well. I'm even learning new words!

The first read aloud for the year is The Tanglewoods Secret by Patricia St. John. So far, we think it's a really good book!

I forgot to show everyone our new white board area when I posted about Our Homeschool Space. I moved our wedding picture and replaced it with a whiteboard I found at a thrift store. Then I hung a little bucket from the Target dollar spot on the nail that used to hold our picture! The bucket is working out very well. It is filled with dry erase markers and kleenex's (our erasers). Next to the white board, I taped our memory verse to the wall.
