Pioneer Dress Finished

What do you think?  I know it looks like a night gown, but I followed the pattern exactly!  I still need to make the apron and matching bonnet.  I am very pleased with the outcome, and so was the little girl I made it for, her face lit up when she had it on.  She is so excited to have a pink dress, very cute!  I used the McCall's pattern 9424, see the picture here.  The McCall's pattern was a little difficult to understand, especially the yoke part, but I was able to figure it out.  I also made some errors while cutting my pieces out, but fortunately, I had just enough material left to make more pieces.  On the pattern pieces, it says cut 2, but it really means you need 4 because you're supposed to cut the pieces out with the fabric folded in half.  Keep checking back to see the completed outfit.  There are also several projects waiting to be posted in April (they are gifts that can't be posted until they are given).

  1. It might look like a nightgown now, but with the apron it'll look very different. Most pioneer dresses are like that. :) Sadie has a dress that's similar to that style and until the apron goes on it looks like a nightgown too. Proud of you, the dress is turning out great. I wish I could sew that well, but I have no patience for patterns.

  2. Amy, this dress was really not hard, I was surprised! I'm sure you could do it! Now that I know the basics of putting this dress together, I'm going to try and make a smaller one for Rebekah. Those pioneer ladies really knew how to make a dress that would last a long time! With the big sleeves and gathered dress part, this dress will probably fit for a couple years.

  3. Hi - looks great! I am doing the pinafore and it's my first time sewing. It's been an interesting experience but my daughter is very excited to wear it for halloween. I've lost piece #16 which is the guide for the bonnet. So I'm really not sure now how long to make the elastic!! Would you be able to help?
Thanks so much if you can!

    1. Michelle,
I just looked at the back of the pattern and it says 1/4 yard, which would be 9 inches. I didn't have time to pull the pattern out and look at the pieces, but I hope that helps. I'm sure your daughter will love it!
